What is an F1 Mini Bernedoodle?

An F1 Bernedoodle is the most basic, first generation cross of a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog and a purebred miniature Poodle. F1 minis are medium-sized, averaging between 35 and 55 lbs at adult weight. This is the generation that most people think of as the classic Bernedoodle since the DNA is the closest to a 50/50 split of the two breeds of origin. This first generation has a large amount of genetic diversity, so their appearance can vary. For instance, the coat could appear straighter, like a Bernese Mountain Dog, it could have the curliness of the Poodle’s coat, or it could be somewhere in between.

While most F1 Bernedoodles will likely shed much less than a Bernese Mountain Dog, they can shed a bit and trigger some allergy sufferers. So, if you or someone in your household has allergies to dog dander, you may be safer choosing the F1b generation.  These have a higher content of poodle heritage and traits, and therefore are much less likely to trigger an allergic reaction.
